Frequently Asked Questions

Do you charge for estimates?

No, we do not charge for estimates. For remodels, without a detailed plan we will not be able to give you an exact price but we can give you a cost range if you can provide us some details regarding your home (this can usually be done via email.)

Why do I need an electrician?

Electricians spend a minimum of 6 years learning their trade before starting their business. They are insured, trained, equipped, and prepared for the work they need to perform. Electrical work, in our opinion, should not be performed by anyone but an electrician.

No matter the context, electrical wiring, devices and equipment should be installed solely by an insured, competent and professional licensed electrical contractor (EC) or competent, journeyman wireman or registered apprentice under the guidance and supervision of a licensed electrical contractor.

In the state of RI, no person besides the homeowner is permitted by law to perform electrical work on a home, business, or industrial facility without an electrical contractor’s license. That means that the contractor hanging your cabinets should not be adding or removing wiring, lighting, or electrical appliances.

If you own your home, you are permitted to do your own electrical work as long as you pull a permit and have it inspected.

While this may seem to go against the idea of hiring an EC, keep in mind that the majority of electrical work performed by homeowners or non-EC’s is done without permits. This results in homes, usually older ones, being filled with layers of shoddy and dangerous electrical work.

Do you design and install commercial fire alarm/residential smoke and carbon monoxide alarm systems?

Yes we do. There is a planning and design fee of $125 per hour to render plans and submit them to the fire department official in your jurisdiction.

Can you inspect a home I want to buy for faulty wiring?

We are happy to help any prospective homebuyer identify problems in the wiring or electrical system of a house. We will typically charge $80-$100 per electrician per hour for this service and provide you a verbal report of our findings as well as a written report with photos for your records.

Are you/Do you work for the power company?

We are a private corporation that is unaffiliated with any power company. We do not currently perform any contractual work for any power company. If you are having issues with the electrical system in your home it is your responsibility to correct it. Sometimes issues such as flickering lights or power loss are the fault of the power company; you as a customer own all of the electrical equipment connected to your home including the cable or wiring bringing power into the meter.

Electrical contractors do not typically work directly for the local utility company - however, some of the larger ones will perform work for them.
